Further Info:
The four-leaf clover is an uncommon variation of the common, three-leaved clover. According to tradition, such leaves bring good luck to their finders, especially if found accidentally. According to legend, each leaf represents something: the first is for faith, the second is for hope, the third is for love, and the fourth is for luck (the three-leaf shamrock had been used by St. Patrick as a metaphor for the Christian Trinity).
Clovers can have more than four leaves: the most ever recorded is 56, discovered by Shigeo Obara of Hanamaki, Iwate, Japan on 10 May 2009.
It has been estimated that there are approximately 10,000 three-leaf clovers for every four-leaf clover;[4] However, this probability has not deterred collectors who have reached records as high as 160,000 four-leaf clovers. Irishman Dominic Gagliardi holds the throne with 600,999 4 leaf clover finds.  It is debated whether the fourth leaflet is caused genetically or environmentally. Its relative rarity suggests a possible recessive gene appearing at a low frequency. Alternatively, four-leaf clovers could be caused by somatic mutation or a developmental error of environmental causes. They could also be caused by the interaction of several genes that happen to segregate in the individual plant. It is possible all four explanations could apply to individual cases.[citation needed]
The four-leaf clover legend is that if you find one, you will have luck; white clovers are considered to be even more lucky, due to their rarity. Historically it is believed that ancient Celts warded off evil with clovers.
The generation before me put four leafed clovers between the pages of their prayer books! The first literary reference to draw on the tradition of four leaf clovers as good-luck charms seems to have been made in 1620. In that year, according to the University of Illinois, Sir John Melton wrote, "If a man walking in the fields find any four-leaved grass, he shall in a small while after find some good thing." It is estimated that, on average, there are 10,000 three leaf clovers for every instance of a true four leaf clover.
